Technicolor Galaxy Progress

After a MUCH needed retreat - I've made some progress on Technicolor Galaxy - not much... but some!

They thought it was hilarious that I brought a printer with me....but lo and behold, several people used it!!  I needed to print\cut petals and hexies on water soluble stabilizer.  And I also wanted to get out my colored pencils and color my center!   I wanted to add hot pink\magenta to the wheel, so I needed to figure out how to work it in there.

I had pulled a LAUNDRY basket of scraps and fat quarters of everything I thought might go into this quilt.

I played with color almost all weekend.

Using a portable design wall (small one) I started throwing colors down.   I kept looking at the cover for reference of how I wanted to the colors to blend.

Color Wheel!!!  Weeeee...
It felt so good to cut the first pieces and COMMIT to making this quilt.   Lots and lots of starch, careful cutting.   I made my first pass at the center....
First Pass
Then I started throwing down fabrics to move out into the quilt.   I struggled with this!  I couldn't figure out why the colors I kept trying to achieve and color wheels I was googling on my laptop were NOT meshing with what I was visualizing.

Working Outward
After doing this for most of the weekend - there was LOTS of ironing and starching going on too...trust me, I DID make progress....kind of...

THEN I finally figured out what was screwing me up!   The cover photo of the quilt was MIRRORED.   The colors were going the wrong way around the wheel!    Made some adjustments and settled with this rendition.

Final?   Maybe?
Then the weekend ended...and I had to pile it all back in the laundry basket.   I was so hoping I would get all the bags filled for all the months at least.    Going to have to unpack it all and spread it out at home.    Once all the pieces parts are in their bags - it will be easy peasy to carry along to sew days!

Technicolor Galaxy - SkillBuilder

So I COULD go on and on about my UFO's....    Not feeling it.   Instead...  Let's start something new! I've been eyeing this project for a year and a half.

Online Class purchased and the printer templates are in route.   I'm excited.  The class was the Skillbuilder BOM for 2015 and is now complete and ready to purchase without waiting each month. SCORE!

Technicolor Galaxy - Front View

Technicolor Galaxy - Back View

I gotta tell ya - right off the bat - MONEY WELL SPENT!   Wow is this lady impressive!!!

I got my super secret Logon to pileofabric.com and to be honest?   She doesn't charge enough!   Printable PDF's, lesson by lesson.   Video tutorials.  Full color pattern is 119 pages.   And she makes you ORGANIZE the project before hand.   Love that!   While I can't officially say I've started this...the printer is on fire.   I'm excited!

This video Alyssa recently put on YouTube sealed the deal!!!  A Peek into the Technicolor Galaxy Quilt

Last Summer I presented a Block of the Month (BOM) pattern for the girls at my local quilt guild. The idea behind this pattern was to use Machine Embroidery or fussy cut fabrics, or even hand embroidered blocks into a traditional style wall hanging.   I'm hoping to use this pattern over and over again for different seasons, themes, whatever!   I wanted to take a moment to share the final wall hanging.  You can take a look at where it started here.

Here's the next installment of my Seasonal Special Block wall Hanging series for Month 2!  If you want the instructions that I made for everyone on piecing them together, just shoot me a message!

2015 Seasonal Special Block Wall Hanging Series

Unit 2 (Make 2) Notice Placement difference!
Finished Block Size is 7” x 10”

“Special Block Size” = 5 ½” x 7” finished

Cutting:
a) Using 1 ½” Strips – cut 8 squares You could also sew two strips together and cut two patch units to save time

b) Cut 2 small rectangles 2” x 1 ½” The center of that row needs to be just a tad bit bigger to fit!

c) If you are doing a “special” block in these squares, they have to be trimmed (allowing for seam allowance) to 6” x 7 ½” to fit here.

d) Cut 2 pieces to 2” x 8.5” (I fussy cut a fun fabric here!)

e) These spots get just a little piece of filler.  Cut 4 pieces at 1” x 2 ½”.

f)  Using whatever method you prefer, make 24 Half-Square Triangles at 1 ½” x 1 ½”.  These finish at 1” when sewn in, and can be hard to get just right because they are so small.   Either make them bigger and trim down, or use 1.0 Finished Thangles like I did!!  Love these things!

I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with next!!!
